The State Department advises U.S. citizens to not travel to five states in Mexico due to increasing levels of crime and kidnapping. Those states are Colima (where Manzanillo is located), Michoacan, Sinaloa (where Mazatlán is located), Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas (home to Zacatecas City).
Remain vigilant in airports, bus stations, buses and the Mexico City metro system. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, Keep your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, in a secure place. Don’t show signs of affluence or wear expensive jewellery.
