The severity of your dog’s pain. Your dog’s overall health. Your dog’s other pain medications. You’ll typically give your dog amantadine once or twice daily, on a long-term basis.
Dose on 10–15 mg/kg of acetaminophen. Above doses that correspond to 2 mg/kg of codeine, sedation can be seen as a side effect. Amantadine 1.0–4.0 mg/kg PO q 24 hrs. This drug is an NMDA antagonist (although originally marketed as an antiviral agent) and seems to produce significant level of analgesia when given in combination with a NSAID.
Amantadine Doses For Dogs and Cats: 3–5 mg/kg PO q24h. For severe cases, consider dividing the dose q12h. Note: Administer with food to minimize GI upset. Monitor for any signs of GI distress or behavioral changes. 3–5 mg/kg PO q24h. Adjust dose based on patient response. Regularly assess for effectiveness and side effects. 1–4 mg/kg PO q24h.
