Understanding Ocean Acoustics emphasises such applications and issues relevant to studies of the ocean environment and aquatic life. Its focus is therefore environmental research and development using low frequencies relevant to fish and sea mammals.
9 Απρ 2021 · The scientists plan to listen to the ocean soundscape before, during and after lockdown. They have identified 200 ocean hydrophones - underwater microphones that are already in place around the...
10 Απρ 2019 · Ship engines, underwater blasts, sonar and oil drilling are filling the seas with sound. Researchers are now trying to pin down the damage humanity’s growing acoustic footprint has on ocean life.
18 Σεπ 2020 · A great variety of natural and artificial sound sources are detectable in the ocean, including earthquakes, shipping noise, breakup of floating ice sheets, oil exploration, rainfall, breaking waves, and large marine mammals, such as blue whales capable of signaling each other over ocean basin distances.
With the improved ocean state estimates obtained by including acoustic tomography data, we will be able to more directly link animal behavior with ocean physics and determine how marine mammals function and adapt to the constantly changing conditions of a dynamic ocean.
23 Ιουλ 2024 · Ocean Acoustics - the study of sound in the ocean, how it travels, interacts with, and is affected by its underwater surroundings - is a growing and critical field. Sound from both natural and human-generated sources can be an effective tool for probing the ocean environment.
Ocean Acoustics uses sound to listen in to what’s happening and collect data that illuminates life in the ocean. Land ecologists study landscape, geology and weather. Ocean acousticians study soundscapes. This project makes visible the invisible world of sound in the sea.
