16 Ιουν 2011 · Then-athletic director Jack Weidenbach refused to take meetings with pro-Willy students and told the Michigan Daily that U-M wasn’t interested, period. Undeterred, the entrepreneurs obtained trademarks for Willy the Wolverine and started selling paraphernalia with the mascot’s likeness.
Biff was a wolverine who served as a team mascot at University of Michigan football games and was later kept in a small zoo at the University of Michigan in the 1920s and 1930s. In the mid-1920s, before the acquisition of a live wolverine, the University of Michigan used a mounted and stuffed wolverine, also named "Biff", as the team mascot.

A mascot hadn’t been established by 1923 when head coach Fielding Yost, reportedly inspired by the University of Wisconsin’s practice of bringing a live badger to games, sought live wolverines for the Michigan sidelines.
