A Man Called Horse is a 1970 Western film directed by Elliot Silverstein, produced by Sandy Howard, and written by Jack DeWitt. It is based on a short story of the same name by the Western writer Dorothy M. Johnson, first published in 1950 in Collier's magazine and again in 1968 in Johnson's book Indian Country.

Set in 1820s America, it tells the story of an English Aristocrat, Lord John Morgan (starring [http://imdb.com/name/nm0001321/ Richard Harris), who is captured by the Sioux while hunting in America. Morgan is brutally treated by the tribe, and is given to the Chief's mother as if he were a horse.
Captured by Sioux Indians, Morgan is at first targeted for quick extinction, but the tribesmen sense that he is worthy of survival. He eventually passes the many necessary tests that will permit him to become a member of the tribe. In 1825, English peer Lord John Morgan is cast adrift in the American West.
Richard Harris stars as an English Lord in the American West in 1825. He is captured by the Sioux Indians where he is first humiliated, but learns the Indian way of life, participates in a painful ritual, finds love and teaches the Indians a thing or two about war.
After his victory, he proposes marriage to one of the women with the horses taken in battle as bride-price and undergoes painful initiation rites, taking the native name "Shunkawakan" (or "Horse") as his Sioux name.
