A dual hdmi adapter into a single usb-c can only display a mirrored image on both. You would need to use a specific thunderbolt dock (rather than usb-c adapter) or plug the monitors separately into the different buses (one on either side). To solve this, I have a cheap usb hub with a button on it that switches all the devices from one computer to the other. I plug both my fancy 4K screens into each computer (DisplayPort for the desktop, usb-c for work MacBook) On one computer, I run a small application that listens for the usb hub disconnecting or connecting.
