Between, among: meaning and use. We use between to refer to two things which are clearly separated. We use among to talk about things which are not clearly separated because they are part of a group or crowd or mass of objects:

Between vs. Among—What’s the Difference? Use between when referring to one-to-one relationships. Use among when referring to indistinct or nonspecific relationships. We already touched on the difference between between and among when we talked about the difference between among and amongst.
But a more accurate rule is to use between when you want to talk about the relationship of distinct and usually equal entities ('Let's keep this between me, you, and Kim.') and use among when referring to things collectively or as a group ('danced among the trees').
12 Αυγ 2011 · Between is used in speaking of only two things, people, etc.: "we must choose between two equally unattractive alternatives." Among is used for collective and undefined relations of usually three or more: "Agreement on landscaping was reached among all the neighbors."
