By the end of third grade students use a range of algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction to fluently add and subtract within 1000.
But over the years of teaching how to add an open number to my 2nd grade students, I have found how to best scaffold this method so that students can find success. So today I’m sharing exactly how I teach the open number line strategy along with my best tips.
Estimation. Here is everything you need to know about estimation for. You’ll learn the definition of estimation and how to use various estimation strategies to make calculations quicker and easier. Students will first learn about estimation in 3rd grade math as part of their work with operations and algebraic thinking.
Example. Consider the open number sentence: 5 + x > 10. In this statement, x is the variable. The goal is to find the value of x that makes the inequality true. Solving Open Number Sentences. To solve an open number sentence, you can use inverse operations to isolate the variable.
Bridging Concepts. Students understand the base-ten number system (i.e., the value of each place is 10 times the value of the digit to the right). Students have an understanding that the value of the digit is determined by its place in the number.

Using open number lines for rounding can make a huge difference for upper elementary students. While teaching 5th and 6th grade I found most students did not understand rounding and tended to rely heavily on algorithms. The solution was simply to teach them to use an open number line to round.
