At 9:20 AM, pilots from Hornet’s torpedo squadron (VT-8) made the Figure 2: SBD "Dauntless" dive bombers from USS Hornet (CV-8) Mikuma to make the third set of attacks on her, during the early afternoon of June 6, 1942. Mikuma had been hit earlier by strikes from Hornet and USS Enterprise (CV-6), leaving her dead in the water and fatally damaged.
USS Hornet (CV-8) was the third and final member of the Yorktown class, commissioned just weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor. As a pre-World War II vessel, her size was limited in accordance with naval treaties of the 1930’s.
