On first launching VCV Rack, you are presented with a template patch that provides a nice overview of the signal connectivity required to create a MIDI-controlled, multi-oscillator monosynth. Two critical modules here are VCV Audio and VCV MIDI to CV.

Here’s my best VCV Rack modules, I’ve updated this in 2024, including lots of new ones for VCV Rack 2. I’ve included my best fee modules and best paid too. If I was to start from scratch and only get a few I would choose all the free VCV Rack and Surge XT modules, plus the VCV Drums to get started.

VCV Library Instructions. Download and install VCV Rack. Register for a VCV account and log in using Rack’s “Library” menu. Add or purchase a module on the VCV Library. Open the “Library” menu in Rack, click “Update all” (if updates are needed), and restart Rack once downloaded.
VCV Rack is the engine powering VCV modules. Add modules, connect cables, edit parameters, and save/load patches. Create generative patches with your mouse, perform with your MIDI keyboard controller, or connect it to your favorite DAW using the VCV Bridge VST/AU plugin (coming soon).
