Technically a glandularia but often referred to as verbena, this cultivar has deep, velvety flowers with a reddish-pink hue, set against deep green foliage. Common lantana is an annual or perennial, small, broadleaf evergreen shrub in the Verbenaceae (verbena) family that has woody stems but a sprawling habit. It is 1 to 6 feet high and 3 to 5 feet wide. It is native to the West Indies and Mexico to Tropical America.
The Verbenaceae family of about 1,200 species has mostly tropical flowering plants with hairy, serrated leaves and spikey—sometimes woolly—inflorescences made up of small fragrant flowers. Most are native to the Americas, although the true vervains are native to Eurasia. Sweet almond verbena (Aloysia virgata).
