For marine VHF (frequencies between 156 MHz to 163 MHz), a formula tells us the wavelength is about 1.91 metres. Many antenna designs exist, each emphasizing some important characteristic such as gain, directivity, polarization, bandwidth, and physical size.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) assigns a channel number to each frequency for simplex channels, or pair of frequencies in the case of duplex channels. This standardised set of frequencies and channel numbers is used by marine VHF manufacturers to program their VHFs.

2 Νοε 2021 · Original Band Plan. The VHF Marine Band is a global frequency allocation from 156.000-Mhz to about 162.0375-MHz. In the initial division of the band into channels, each channel was allowed a bandwidth of 0.050-MHz or 50-kHz.
