Blue Racer Standard. The "little brother" to the Original key is physically smaller - base width 2.5" instead of 3.5" and uses a different stock weighting arrangement for slightly faster key speed (Vari-Speed accessory can be used with this key also).
I recently purchased (yup hard to believe it - forty years) a Blue Racer Deluxe direct from Vibroplex. It was shipped promptly and beautifully finished except for the finger pieces. As a few have noted here and elsewhere, the edges are crudely finished and the material looks cheap.
Any Vibroplex with a 2.5” wide base is a Blue Racer. However, the Blue Racer was also available (by special order) on the standard 3.5” base, and several have been found with a 3” base. Late in WW2, Vibroplex modernized the design with rounded castings, and the damper assembly was changed from the “U” damper to the modern “L” damper.
The Blue Racer - 2000 i s designed for code speeds ranging from approximately 20 wpm on the low side to 50+ wpm on the high side. Owning this beautifully crafted instrument will link you to a great tradition.
I started with a Original Standard , brand new, and loved it despite lack of 'jeweled' movement. I then found my father's old Standard Blue Racer, circa 1954, which also lacks the jeweled movement, but oh, the ol' Blue Racer is so much smoother than the new 'Original'!
Vibroplex No. 4, Blue Racer Production: 1914 – 1966; 2000 – Present. Nameplates are defined on N0UF's excellent nameplates page. They're also in Tom French's Vibroplex Collector's Guide. (Click on the pictures to see larger images.) 1926 #97094. Standard New York Nameplate: D3. 0051
I have the standard version but both the standard and Deluxe versions come with jewelled bearings (I called Vibroplex to make sure mine wasn't a fluke). Another welcome change is a slightly thinner mainspring so you can slow this bug down to about 16 - 18 WPM.
