Hey guys I recently resurrected an old Compaq Presario V6500 laptop from 2007, it currently has 2 GB of ram and runs on AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-58. I'm not sure if I should go for 64 or 32 bit vista, what do you say?
7 Μαΐ 2009 · 1. If you need more RAM, go 64 bit. 32 bit is still the standard, and the most widely supported, with many applications not even capable of supporting or taking advantage of 64-bits. If you don't want to run any risks of non-compatibility, go with the 32-bit option.
A 32bit OS can use about 3GB of RAM, while a 64bit OS can use a lot more. (theoretically 2^64 bit). So for your Laptop there is no real need to use a 64bit OS. If you'd like to update your RAM to 4, 8 or even 16 GB you need a 64bit OS to really use the RAM.
All editions of Windows Vista 64-bit provide increased memory support beyond the standard 4 gigabytes (GB) available with 32-bit editions. In theory, a 32-bit CPU supports 2 32 Byte = 4GB RAM. Unfortunately, Vista x86 supports only up to 3.12 GB. For compatibility reasons Vista has to reserve some of its memory for device drivers. So putting more than 3GB in a computer that runs Vista x86 doesn’t make sense.
12 Μαΐ 2008 · Vista 32 bit can only see 4 gigs (actually more like 3.25 GB) of ram the 64 bit version can see over 8 GB. The main disadvantages of 64 bit operating system is the incompatibility with programs and hardware due to lack of drivers currently for 64 bit Vista.
