W. & L.E. Gurley patented a Latitude Level on September 2, 1884. Its purpose was to "recover the Latitude of a Solar Transit, without referring to the vertical arc; and generally for setting the telescope at any desired angle in running grades, etc."
W. & L. E. Gurley Light Mountain Transit Offered here is a nice looking antique W. & L. E. Gurley transit in its original box. There is no serial # which would date this Gurley Light Mountain size transit as pre 1908. The overall condition is excellent.
This example was made after 1886, when Gurley began using bent standards, and before 1908, when Gurley began using serial numbers. The label in the box, with an image of "W. & L. E. Gurley's Instrument Manufactory," was used until 1900, and suggests that the transit was made before that date.

Teledyne Corporation purchased W. & L. E. Gurley in 1968 and the company became Teledyne Gurley. Production of surveying instruments ceased in 1980 in the face of stiff foreign competition and the technological shift away from optical instruments.
Description: W. & L. E. Gurley termed this a Surveyor's Transit with two verniers to the horizontal limb. The inscription on this example reads "W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y. 9296." The horizontal circle is silvered, graduated every 30 minutes of arc, and read by opposite verniers to single minutes.
