Motherless--The Shepherds Pet, was well received when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy both for its sentimental subject of a collie tenderly attanding to a stray lamb, and also for the depiction of the collie alone. This painting was used as a greeting card by The Medici Society, Ltd. in 1992.

Walter Hunt painted farmyard scenes in a style similar to Edgar, especially barn interiors with donkeys and calves, but he went further afield for his subjects and included sporting scenes in his oeuvre.
He began painting when he was thirteen years old. Hunt lived in Wandsworth, South West London. He exhibited his works at the Royal Academy beginning in 1881 when he was twenty years old, and also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists and at the Walker Gallery.
