As many as ten million soldiers died in the fighting along with many millions of civilian casualties. Deadly new weapons of war such as high-explosive shells, tanks, powerful machine guns, and poison gas escalated the death toll. Canada goes to war. Germany invaded Belgium on 4 August 1914.
