This is the smallest of the Oklahoma rattlesnakes, hence the name "pygmy." It has a gray to pinkish body with dark blotches down its back and one to three rows of spots along each side. Most pygmys have a faint reddish-brown stripe running along the center of their back.

These snakes typically have a light brown, tan, or grayish-brown color, with dark brown to black oval-shaped blotches running down their spine, and smaller blotches on their sides.

This species is the smallest rattlesnake found in Oklahoma! Pygmy Rattlesnakes occupy a wide variety of habitats. Typically, they can be found in pine forests, dry upland forests, floodplains, sandhills, and near lakes, rivers, and marshes.
Sistrurus miliarius streckeri is found in the United States in Mississippi (except for southeast of the Pearl River Valley), west through Louisiana into eastern Texas, and north into southeastern and central Oklahoma, Arkansas, southern Missouri, and southwestern Tennessee.
