Electrons and Sublevels. Principal energy levels are broken down into sublevels. Theoretically there are an infinite number principal energy levels and sublevels. If you are just starting to study chemistry, you should only be concerned with the first 4 sublevels. Each sublevel is assigned a letter.

20 Σεπ 2022 · What Are Energy Levels? Energy levels (also called electron shells) are fixed distances from the nucleus of an atom where electrons may be found. Electrons are tiny, negatively charged particles in an atom that move around the positive nucleus at the center. Energy levels are a little like the steps of a staircase.
4 Ιουλ 2023 · Orbitals are labeled based on their principal energy levels and sublevels (1s, 2p, and so on). Listed below are the orbital diagrams of a few more common elements, along with their electron configuration:
10 Απρ 2023 · Subshells. The principal quantum shells are split into subshells which are given the letters s, p and d. Elements with more than 57 electrons also have an f subshell. The energy of the electrons in the subshells increases in the order s < p < d. The order of subshells overlap for the higher principal quantum shells as seen in the diagram below:

The energy of the electrons in a sublevel would then be lower with half-filled orbitals than with some filled and some empty. We can show the distribution of electrons by using box diagrams, where each box represents an orbital and the arrows within the boxes represent the electrons in that orbital.
Each shell has a different energy level, increasing the further it is from the nucleus. Each energy level is given a number called the principal quantum number, n. The closest shell has a value of n=1. The next shell has a value of n=2, etc.
