24 Μαΐ 2023 · Although this review aims to provide an overview of the current state of gender diversity in sports medicine, the focus lies specifically in a cohort that has thus far not been studied extensively: team physicians and athletic trainers. Overall, the field of medicine has become more gender diverse.
Despite constituting approximately 50% of the population, women specifically are under-represented in sport and exercise medicine (SEM) and they often experience a negative bias.
In 2019, 23% of fellows and 30% of registrars were women.2 According to the 2020 Physician Specialty Data Report, only 29.4% of sports medicine physicians in the USA3 (residents and fellows) are women and only 12.9% of sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons are women.
