Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH) together regulate the male reproductive system. FSH acts specifically on the Sertoli cells of the testis to stimulate cell proliferation during development and to increase the number of spermatozoa which are formed by the testis.
FSH is elevated late in anestrus, but follicles may actually be selected for the next cycle at this time. This is really not known very well. Inhibin may inhibit FSH, but it has not been documented in the bitch.
