Both sides used rapid-firing machine guns against anyone who tried to get across the no-man’s land. Soldiers fought two of the war’s worst battles on the Western Front in 1916. The First Battle of the Somme took place near the Somme River in France from July to November.
Over 9 million military personnel and 13 million civilians died in the destruction caused by World War I. It was the first time machines were used on a large scale in military operations. This war also saw the use of navy and airforce as independent military operations.
The Time Machine was the first novel by English author H.G. Wells. It was published in book form in 1895. The Time Machine is considered one of the earliest works of science fiction and of the “time travel” subgenre. It was made into a movie of the same name in 1960 (see The Time Machine).
The story opens on a dinner party at the home of an eminent scientist, the Time Traveller, who is explaining to his assembled guests (including the narrator telling the story) principles of science and math that support the possibility of traveling across time, just as one would travel across space.
It was the first time in history that Britain had come under threat from the sky. Gigantic German airships, known as Zeppelins (below), carried out 52 bombing raids on Britain during the war – killing more than 500. People were terrified of them!
