"The Language of Mathematics" is a course that emphasizes how mathematical thoughts, methods, and facts are expressed in symbolism. That is, it emphasizes how to read and write mathematics.
In this book, you will get extensive practice with mathematical language ideas, to enhance your ability to correctly read, write, speak, and understand mathematics. Every language has its vocabulary (the words), and its rules for combining these words into complete thoughts (the sentences). Mathematics is no exception.
Four basic concepts. Another word, which famously has three quite dis-tinct meanings, is “is”. The three meanings are illustrated in the following three sentences. 5 is the square root of 25. 5 is less than 10. 5 is a prime number.
Introduction. Mathematics has its own language, much of which we are already familiar with. For example the digits. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. are part of our everyday lives. Whether we refer to 0 as ‘zero’, ‘nothing’, ‘nought’, or ‘O’ as in a telephone number, we understand its meaning.
