Identify a message communicated by direct cell-to-cell contact. What occurs during this process?
For example, when acetylcholine is released at the synapse between a nerve and muscle (called the neuromuscular junction) by a presynaptic neuron, it causes postsynaptic Na + channels to open. Na + enters the postsynaptic cell and causes the postsynaptic membrane to depolarize.
The gate then opens and specific ions can flow through the channel and rapidly change the concentration of the particular ion within that cell. When the ligand disociates from this receptor, the gate closes and ions no longer enter the cell.
