27 Οκτ 2023 · Guide bushings are removable collets that attach to your router’s baseplate, surrounding the bit. They consist of a locking nut and another piece with a “barrel.” This barrel surrounds the router bit, acting as a guide for referencing templates and jigs.
20 Ιαν 2017 · Here's the basic concept: A guide bushing mounts to the router's subbase with a tube that protrudes below. A straight router bit extends through the tube. The outer surface of the tube rides against an edge guide or template, keeping the bit a set distance (offset) from the edge guide or template.
Leigh guide bushings are designed around the industry standard — a threaded bushing and nut having the dimensions shown. Some routers accept these bushings directly or come with an adaptor. For those that don’t, Leigh offers several adaptors shown in the Guide Bushing Adaptors chart below.
To change the router bit on your Porter-Cable 1001, safely unplug the tool and locate the collet nut at the base of the router. Insert the provided wrench into the two holes on either side of the collet nut and turn it clockwise to loosen the nut. Once loose, remove the current bit and replace it with your desired bit.

Guide bushings are simple devices that when used properly, extend the capabilities of your router. The bushing fits into the hole in the routers baseplate and is designed to follow a template, which guides the router bit, transferring the templates shape to another piece of wood.
The below chart gives the offset for common guide-bushing and router-bit diameter combinations. Note that some combinations won’t work because the router bit is too large to fit inside the guide bushing with sufficient clearance.
