Pet endoscopy is a valuable diagnostic tool for veterinarians, offering a non-invasive way to examine pets’ internal organs. Using a flexible tube with a camera, veterinarians can visualize areas such as the esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, and respiratory tract.
What is an endoscope and how is it used? An endoscope is a flexible tube with a viewing port and/or a video camera attachment that is inserted either into the stomach through the mouth or the colon via the rectum.
An endoscope is a finite tool with a tiny camera or open-ended view point to view the tract as the scope enters and travels through the dog’s body. The endoscope will be inserted into your dog’s stomach or intestinal tract through the mouth or the rectum and advanced to visualize the required area.
22 Αυγ 2019 · Endoscopy is a versatile and minimally invasive technique used to visualize the gastrointestinal (GI) lumen, perform biopsies for further analysis such as histopathology or bacterial analysis, and to deliver treatment for problems such as strictures, polyps or foreign body removal.
Flexible endoscopes are most commonly used for lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, as they allow evaluation of the entire length of the colon compared to rigid endoscopes. Most gastroscopes will be suitable for lower gastrointestinal tract endoscopy, but in large dogs, a longer colonoscope (Figure 1) may be needed to evaluate the proximal colon.
Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGIE) is a minimally invasive procedure that can: Aid in the diagnostic evaluation of clinical signs referable to the esophagus, stomach, and proximal small intestine (Figure 1) Obtain biopsy samples as part of the diagnostic evaluation of a pet with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) signs.
