The goal of this project is to measure the heights of tall buildings (or the altitude of a kite, or a model rocket at the top of its flight), using a device for measuring angles and some basic properties of right triangles.
Then we have a discussion about what measurement means and I show them the "Measurement" poster and we discuss the different ways we can measure things (i.e., length, height, capacity, temperature, weight). The poster has lots of graphics on it so I use those to explain the new words.
Height is a measure of vertical distance, vertical meaning perpendicular to the surface of the earth. We’ve all “read somewhere” that a particular tree is of a certain height, or that the moon is a certain distance from here, and vaguely wondered how someone would know that.

Assessment of height (or stature) is conducted by direct measurement of the length from the bottom of the feet to the highest point of the head. Standing height can be measured in participants that can stand without assistance and who are cooperative (typically 2 to 3 years of age and older).
