Orthographic processing refers to the “ability to form, store, and access the orthographic representation” of words (Stanovich & West, 1989, p. 404).
1 Μαρ 2020 · Orthographic processing – the ability to perceive, access, differentiate, and manipulate orthographic knowledge – is essential when learning to recognize words. Despite its critical importance in literacy acquisition, the field lacks a tool to assess this essential cognitive ability.
Orthographic processing is the ability to recognize written words and understand the spelling patterns of those words, which is crucial for reading fluency and comprehension. This skill allows individuals to decode letters and sequences accurately, linking visual symbols to their corresponding sounds and meanings.
Examples include maturational readiness (the majority of 6-year-olds can learn to read whereas few 2-year-olds can), fluency in oral language, and an interest in reading (for summaries of the reading literature, see Adams, 1990; Crowder & Wagner, 1991; Rayner & Pollatsek, 1989).

Abstract. The role of orthographic processing skill (OPS) in reading has aroused the interest of many developmental researchers. Despite observations by Vellutino that current measures of OPS primarily are indicators of reading (and spelling) achievement, OPS commonly is distinguished from both reading achievement and phonological skills.
