This property of plasticity, often found in combination with other special properties such as low density, low electrical conductivity, transparency, and toughness, allows plastics to be made into a great variety of products.
Plastics are derived from natural, organic materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and, of course, crude oil. Crude oil is a complex mixture of thousands of compounds and needs to be processed before it can be used.
Crude oil is one of the main ingredients needed to make plastic. But it’s also a fossil resource, which means there’s a limited amount of it on our planet. Happily, for one key component in plastic, called aniline, we discovered a way to create it from biomass (materials such as corn, straw and wood) instead of oil.
