Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles (e.g. plastic bottles, bags and microbeads) in the Earth's environment that adversely affects humans, wildlife and their habitat. [1][2] Plastics that act as pollutants are categorized by size into micro-, meso-, or macro debris. [3]
Two main processes are used to produce plastics – polymerisation and polycondensation – and they both require specific catalysts. In a polymerisation reactor, monomers such as ethylene and propylene are linked together to form long polymer chains.
Plastics are made from natural materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and crude oil through a polymerisation or polycondensation process.
Crude oil is one of the main ingredients needed to make plastic. But it’s also a fossil resource, which means there’s a limited amount of it on our planet. Happily, for one key component in plastic, called aniline, we discovered a way to create it from biomass (materials such as corn, straw and wood) instead of oil.
