At the third type of boundary the plates move apart from each other. When they do, the melted rock beneath the plates rises up. This melted rock, or magma, cools as it rises and forms new crust. Earthquakes and volcanoes often happen along plate boundaries.

Kids learn about the Earth science subject of plate tectonics including major and minor plates, convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries.
7 Μαρ 2024 · A transform plate boundary occurs when two plates slide past each other, horizontally. A well-known transform plate boundary is the San Andreas Fault, which is responsible for many of California’s earthquakes. A single tectonic plate can have multiple types of plate boundaries with the other plates that surround it.
13 Ιαν 2021 · Transform Plate Boundary. This is where plates move sideways past each other. The crust here isn’t destroyed, but the movement can still be dangerous if the two plates lock together, causing tension and then snap suddenly, causing an earthquake.
10 Φεβ 2024 · The edges where tectonic plates meet are known as plate boundaries. There are three main types: Convergent Boundaries (Destructive Boundaries or Active Margins): Here, plates move towards each other. Where they meet, they form either a continental collision or else a subduction zone where one plate moves under the other.
The Theory of Plate Tectonics explains how tectonic plates move around on surface of the Earth. Tectonic plates have three major boundaries.
Students will read about the three different types of plate boundaries and the unique geological features that they create. There are four follow-up questions that the students will answer to demonstrate their comprehension of the reading material.
