Respiratory problems during pregnancy may arise from the airways themselves (e.g. asthma), the pulmonary vasculature (e.g. thromboem-bolism), or from the mechanics of breathing (e.g. diaphragmatic splinting). In this review, a symptom-based approach to respiratory problems commonly encountered in obstetric practice is discussed.

Pregnancy may increase the risk or severity of other conditions, including thromboembolism, asthma, viral pneumonitis, and gastric acid aspiration.
The pregnant patient is at increased risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome, particu-larly related to certain infections such as influenza and coronavirus disease 2019. Mechanical ventilation should be carried out using similar parameters to those used in the non-pregnant patient.
