Language features of semi-formal letters include: for example - I’m… (instead of ‘I am’). The use of some more formal vocabulary, for example - ‘receive’ (rather than ‘get’). The use of the words ‘suggest’ and ‘recommend’ to make suggestions (instead of a more formal way, for example - ‘May I suggest…’, or informal way ‘How about ’).
In a semi-formal letter, you have to write to a person whom you have a professional or business relationship with and you know by name. They could be your teachers, business associates, accountants etc., And, you must use a surname when you address them - Dear Mrs. George, Dear Mr. David.
The tone and expressions of a semi-formal letter should be less formal than a formal letter but not too casual. You write such a semi-formal letter to a neighbour, your landlord/landlady, a colleague or a professor at the university.
