Definition. Socialization is a common term in sociology, political science, education, and anthropology as well as psychology where it is used to describe the processes whereby individuals attain the behaviors, norms, beliefs, and ideologies that are needed for competent participation in society.
In this chapter, socialization is defined with reference to contextual affordances, that is, supports and opportunities that facilitate the development of children's school-based competencies.
Investigating socialization in this context is important given the number of hours students spend in school, the emotional nature of social interactions that take place involving teachers and students, and the emotions students often experience in the context of academic work.
Socialization is the process through which students internalize the kinds of commitments that they need to play a useful role in adult society. Although the family and community also socialize students, the length of time students spend in school makes the school class a major influence in the socialization process.
