The chapter begins with an overview of family structure: gender, extended families and non-traditional families. The concept of family practices is then introduced and the rest of the chapter is devoted to consideration of four issues which emerged from the study.
The structure of the family in Islam, once understood, may suggest certain alternative solutions to some of the problems of the contemporary family. Such problems are by no means unique to any particular society. Societal. differences in this regard may be more a question of degree than of kind.

And while it can be justifiably argued that the basic family unit is the foundation of any given human society, this holds particularly true for Muslims.
Writing a book on the family in Islam is not an easy task. This is not because the subject is so vast on account of ethnic diversities and the existence of various religious sects among Muslims; rather because there are so few scholars who are familiar with both Islam and modern social sciences.
