According to 2011 ACS, about 48.5 million people or 15.9 percent of the U.S. population had income below their respective poverty level. Between 2010 and 2011, the number of people with income below the poverty level increased by 2.2 million, while the poverty rate increased by 0.6 percentage points.

Poverty headcount ratio at $5.50 a day is the percentage of the population living on less than $5.50 a day at 2011 international prices. As a result of revisions in PPP exchange rates, poverty rates for individual countries cannot be compared with poverty rates reported in earlier editions.
