We review three elements of pure philosophy and five seminal educational philosophies to help readers ground their personal philosophies in both a theoretical and historical context. We illustrate how core elements of one’s teaching philosophy can influence course design and the classroom environment.
Next, we delineate five major questions that should govern an area of philosophy properly called “philosophy of learning.” Those questions are: (1) Is learning possible?; (2) Is all knowledge acquired through learning?; (3) Where do we draw the boundaries of learning?;
An important aim in Dutch classroom teaching is to learn about philosophy by doing philosophy, an approach advocated by great philosophers such as Plato and Kant, which is the focus of this paper. The most important learning theory where the student ‘learns by doing’ is constructivism [2].
