Reading comprehension requires the construction of a coherent mental representation of the information in a text. Reading involves three interrelated elements—the reader, the text, and the activity, all situated into a broader sociocultural context.
This chapter sheds light on some of the skills and processes that are needed for learners to comprehend multiple texts. The chapter also reveals some key conditions that may facilitate or hinder the application of these processes.
Reading comprehension involves two levels of processing, shallow (low-level) processing and deep (high-level) processing. Deep processing involves semantic processing, which happens when we encode the meaning of a word and relate it to similar words.
