22 Μαΐ 2017 · Although it’s a star – and our local star at that – our sun doesn’t have a generally accepted and unique proper name in English. We English speakers always just call it the sun.
Our Sun is a 4.5 billion-year-old yellow dwarf star – a hot glowing ball of hydrogen and helium – at the center of our solar system. It’s about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) from Earth and it’s our solar system’s only star.
The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a massive, nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, heated to incandescence by nuclear fusion reactions in its core, radiating the energy from its surface mainly as visible light and infrared radiation with 10% at ultraviolet energies.
1 Δεκ 2020 · If you stood on Proxima b's surface, Proxima Centauri would be your Sun, Proxima b's spherical satellite (if it has one) would be your Moon, and the Earth's Sun would be an average star in the night sky we'd have to find a name for in such case (e.g. Cassiopeia VI since it would enlarge the constellation of Cassiopeia by another star).
The Milky Way [c] is the galaxy that includes the Solar System, with the name describing the galaxy's appearance from Earth: a hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars that cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye.
The connection and interactions between the Sun and Earth drive the seasons, ocean currents, weather, climate, radiation belts and auroras. Though it is special to us, there are billions of stars like our Sun scattered across the Milky Way galaxy.
Sol is a class G2 main-sequence yellow dwarf star. Only about 8% of all stars in the Milky Way galaxy for G-type stars. The Sun is spectacular when viewed using a solar filter or dedicated solar scope for seeing sunspots & prominences.
