The Resistance effect is a status effect that reduces the amount of damage you will take in the game with the exception of damage from the Void and the /kill command. There are levels of Resistance such as Resistance II, Resistance III, Resistance IV and so on.

Resistance reduces incoming damage by 20% × level from all sources except for starvation, the void, / kill, and explosions with extreme power values (negative values (128 to 255 (mod 256) or -128 to -1 (mod 256)) stored in an NBT, see entity format) such as creepers and ghast fireballs.
When in-game, game rules can be changed using the /gamerule command, using the syntax /gamerule <rule> [<value>], where <rule> is the name of the game rule and <value> is an allowed value, which depends on the type of the game rule.
You can give a player an effect (ie: potion effect) that is either helpful or harmful by using the /effect command. For example, you can use the /effect command to give the player DigMinecraft the effect called Fire Resistance for 30 seconds:

Usage. In the client, commands are entered via the chat window, which is displayed by pressing the T / [ BE only] / [ BE only] or / key. Using the / key also enters the forward-slash that commands require as a prefix, so it is a useful shortcut.
