The young rabbits grow very fast, and after only a week, the bunnies have fur, and their eyes and ears are open. After two weeks, the bunnies take their first hops away from the nest and a few days later they leave the nest to fend for themselves.
Cottontail rabbits are distributed throughout the United States and Canada. The two species of rabbits in Oklahoma that this publication discusses are the eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) and the swamp rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus).

Cottontail rabbits communicate by thumping their hind feet on the ground, making various vocalizations and screaming at a high pitch if captured. In the wild, cottontail rabbits may live as long as three years, but many perish much sooner. Cottontail rabbits are more active in the evening or at dawn. Cottontail rabbits do not hibernate.
Their eyes begin to open in 4-7 days. Females do not stay in the nest with their kits but return to the opening of the nest to nurse, usually twice a day. Young begin to move out of the nest for short trips by 12 to 16 days and are completely weaned and independent by 4 to 5 weeks.
Rabbit Hunting. There are three species of rabbits in Oklahoma: cottontail, swamp and jackrabbit. The cottontail weighs two to four pounds and is generally grizzled tan, brown and gray with white or light tan on the feet and underside. The underside of the tail is white.
