10 Νοε 2022 · Rh incompatibility occurs when a person who’s Rh-negative becomes pregnant with a fetus with Rh-positive blood. With Rh incompatibility, your immune system reacts to this difference (known as incompatibility) and creates antibodies.
During a pregnancy, Rh antibodies made in a woman's body can cross the placenta and attack fetal blood cells. This can cause a serious type of anemia in the fetus in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body.

If a woman with Rh-negative blood has not been sensitized, her health care provider may suggest that she receive RhIg around the 28th week of pregnancy to prevent sensitization for the rest of the pregnancy.
Problems with the Rh factor happen when the mother's Rh factor is negative and the baby's is positive. If the mother has not already been sensitized to Rh positive blood, she may be given Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg). This will prevent being sensitized if the baby is Rh positive.
The Rh factor does not affect a person’s general health. Problems can occur during pregnancy when the baby’s blood has the Rh factor and the mother’s blood does not, however it can be prevented in most cases with the medication called immunoglobulin (RhIg).
