How Your Rh Factor Blood Type Affects Your Pregnancy. Usually your Rh factor blood type isn’t an issue. But during pregnancy, being Rh-negative can be a problem if your baby is Rh-positive. If your blood and your baby’s blood mix, your body will start to make antibodies that can damage your baby’s red blood cells.
Problems with the Rh factor happen when the mother's Rh factor is negative and the baby's is positive. If the mother has not already been sensitized to Rh positive blood, she may be given Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg). This will prevent being sensitized if the baby is Rh positive.
Rh disease occurs during pregnancy. It happens when the Rh factors in the mom’s and baby’s blood don’t match. It may also happen if the mom and baby have different blood types.
