During a pregnancy, Rh antibodies made in a woman's body can cross the placenta and attack fetal blood cells. This can cause a serious type of anemia in the fetus in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body.
All pregnant women will be tested for Rh status during routine bloodwork taken early in pregnancy. New tests are available to assess the fetus’ Rh status by measuring “cell-free DNA” in the mother’s blood.
If the mother has not already been sensitized to Rh positive blood, she may be given Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg). This will prevent being sensitized if the baby is Rh positive. Sometimes an incompatibility may happen when the mother is blood type O and the baby is either A or B.
