Prospect Bluff Historic Sites (until 2016 known as Fort Gadsden Historic Site, and sometimes written as Fort Gadsden Historic Memorial) [4] is located in Franklin County, Florida, on the Apalachicola River, 6 miles (9.7 km) SW of Sumatra, Florida. The site contains the ruins of two forts.

In 1816, Andrew Jackson ordered the destruction of historic Fort Gadsden, on the Apalachicola River in the Florida Panhandle. Hundreds died in a cataclysmic explosion. This now is a historic site operated by the US Forest Service and open to the public.
Fort Gadsden, a British fort located in the Apalachicola National Forest is a National Historic Landmark. Like Fort Mose near St.Augustine, Fort Gadsden is a precursor site to the Underground Railroad.
26 Αυγ 2024 · The site, commonly known as Fort Gadsden or the colloquial “Negro Fort,” will be closed until Aug. 12, 2025 “unless terminated earlier by an authorized Forest Service official.”.
This fort, Fort Gadsden, remained in use until 1821, when Florida became a U.S. Territory. Detailed interpretive kiosks and signs lead you through the site of both forts and the cemetery where the victims from 1816 are buried.
