The state received its name from that conquistador, who called the peninsula La Pascua Florida in recognition of the verdant landscape and because it was the Easter season, which the Spaniards called Pascua Florida (Festival of Flowers).

It was quickly disestablished. 1817-1818: The First Seminole War begins. 1821: Due to the Adams-Onis Treaty, Spain agreed to cede Florida to the United States. 1822: The Florida Territory was created from East Florida and part of West Florida.
