The new Acropolis Museum was constructed on the south side of the Acropolis at a distance of 300 metres from its monuments. The Museum’s foundations were completed on the 30th of January 2004 and its opening took place on the 20th of June 2009.
The Acropolis Museum (Greek: Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, Mouseio Akropolis) is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece .
The original Acropolis Museum was founded in 1865 and opened in a building on the archaeological site in 1874. To accommodate the growing collection of discoveries, the museum constructed an additional building in 1888 and another after World War II .
The state-of-the-art Acropolis Museum in Athens has the capacity to house them all in optimal conditions, in direct view of the monument. In 1801, Elgin, the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, removed sculptures from the buildings of the Acropolis of Athens without permission from the Sultan.
The early history of the Acropolis. To the left of the broad staircase leading from the ground floor to the first floor are finds linked to the Acropolis’ distant past. These are objects that mark the Rock’s evolution from a citadel and seat of the local ruler to a sacred place dedicated to the worship of Athena and other gods.
The museum was designed by the New York-based architect Bernard Tschumi in cooperation with the Greek architect Michael Photiades. Although it took many years to finish this project (discussions about it started in 1975), the museum was finally inaugurated in June 2009.
