As can be observed on the physical map of Belgium there are three main geographical regions to Belgium: the coastal plain to the northwest, the central plateau, and the Ardennes uplands to the southeast.
The basis of modern Belgium was laid in the southern Catholic provinces that split from the northern provinces after the Union of Utrecht in 1579 (see Netherlands). Annexed by France in 1795, the area was reunited with Holland and with it became the independent Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815.
