Food security in Nicaragua will demand improving water productivity and keeping good balances with food supply, although crop yield could increase through intensified irrigation. Furthermore, these practices along with temperature and rainfall changes may impact the soil -water balance affecting water productivity in the future.
Working in line with Nicaragua’s national human development plan for 2018–2021, WFP will help to accelerate action towards the achievement of zero hunger. The five-year country strategic plan for 2019–2023 has the aim of tackling the underpinning causes of food and nutrition insecurity by promoting long-term solutions to hunger.

Agriculture is a key sector in the Nicaraguan economy. On average, the agricultural sector (including agriculture, forestry, and fisheries) contributes about 17% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to other sectors such as trade (14%) and manufacturing (13%) [3].
