30 Ιαν 2018 · Typically, I use the traditional two-step method: apply my stain, wiping off the excess liquid before it dries, then the next day apply a clear finish. Before staining any softwoods I always add a third step to the beginning of the process by first brushing on Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to reduce any blotchiness.

I used Minwax Poly shades (poly mixed in with stain) as the reviews I found online at first seemed mostly positive. I did not thin it by adding any mineral spirits because I was worried what thinning the poly would effect + the instructions didn't mention thinning the solution.

Tip #1 – Shaking Matters. The contents of any aerosol can tend to settle toward the bottom, so shaking for a full 60 seconds is critical to insure that you will be getting the proper mixture of finish, sheen, solvent, and propellant when you first press the nozzle. Tip #2 – Make Gravity Your Friend.
